This mouse LBP ELISA kit employs the quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique to measure the levels of mouse LBP in serum, plasma, and tissue homogenates. The enzyme-substrate chromogenic reaction is also used to amplify the signal and quantify the levels of the analyte through the intensity of the colored product. The color intensity positively correlates with the amount of LBP bound in the initial step.
LBP is an acute-phase protein mainly produced in hepatocytes that binds to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) thus initiating an innate host response. LBP combines with LPS and then recruits CD14 and MD-4/2 complex, eventually leading to the activation of signal transduction pathways and the generation of cytokines and other pro-inflammatory mediators. Circulating LBP exerts immunologic function in a concentration-dependent manner. Subnormal concentrations of LBP augment phagocytosis and scavenging of LPS from blood. However, high levels of LBP decrease the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. LBP is a potential acute-phase biomarker for monitoring the progress of severe sepsis, infectious endocarditis, and cardiovascular disease.
